International Society's theatre arts program began with the production of Malice of an Empire, written by Yao Ke and translated by Jeremy Ingalls. And it was the first time a stage play of Chinese subject was presented in Boston. The play involved a large cast, a great many costumes designed and built locally for the production, and complex, originally designed scenery. It was a bold and ambitious attempt. A zealous act of the producer who was passionate about introducing major Chinese theatre works to Massachusetts' audience. .

After Tremont Theatre was built, it became the home of International Society's affiliated theatre company, Asia On Stage, and several other companies that joined as theatre- companies-in-residence through a selection process .

Asia On Stage, a repertory theatre, was a spun off from International Society's Theatre Arts Department. It is now one of the resident companies.

Before we rebuilt our facilities in 1998 our theatre productions and other performing arts events were staged at rented spaces such as the Tower Auditorium, the Jordan Hall, and the Kresge Auditorium and the Kresge Theatre.

In 1999 our Theatre-Company-In-Residence program was established. Asia On Stage, Boston Theatre Works, PetBrick Productions and Fresh Fruit Productions are some of the resident companies.
